AN ACTIVE WRITER IN FLORIDA

From the December 2004 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Beverly Peake is an individual Christian Scientist who takes her responsibility to participate in the system of Committee work seriously. Her letters to the editor have been published in The Miami Herald and the Coral Gables Gazette. This is how she describes her approach to writing:

When reading the local papers, I consider myself an advocate for spiritual seekers. That puts me in a "responding" state of mind. I ask: Does this article champion spirituality? Then let's applaud it! Does it ignore or challenge spiritual healing? Then let's set the record straight, because this is an imposition on the readers. If their spiritual-mindedness is dormant, maybe I can help rouse it.

This is how I approached three of my responses. When replying to a newspaper report depicting Florida as the most "pain-ridden" state because of a shortage of physicians, I wrote about relying on God alone for relief. In response to a piece on cancer patients, I congratulated their strong faith. When an extensive article on "healing prayer" was printed with no mention of Christian Science, I wrote of the healings I'd experienced from studying the Bible and Science and Health. I am happy to report that all these responses were published.
