HOME & FAMILY

Baby talk

From the March 2005 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Prayer wasn't a last resort for when they had their son, Blake. In fact, it was the first step they took. Long before sharing the news of Kim's pregnancy with family and friends, the couple set out to build a firm, spiritual foundation for this new addition to their home, and they asked a Christian Science practitioner to support them in that endeavor.

For Kim especially, whose background as a hospital labor and delivery nurse had given her plenty of experience with the physical side of childbirth, putting aside a material perspective and viewing the events of her pregnancy and eventual labor from a spiritual standpoint was essential.

"Mary Baker Eddy said that the best way to approach childbirth is to detach your thought from material conceptions," See Science and Health, p. 463. Kim explains. "That was so key for me throughout the whole experience—to let go of all the material details I'd learned and focus instead on the spiritual process that was going on."
