A CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH

From the January 2006 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It's a common perception that health means having a physical body that works. Most people would also agree that health can be a broader term that characterizes complete personal well-being. But I am discovering that it means even more than this. Health is actually a quality of God. I've learned this through studying the example of Christ Jesus and the teachings of Christian Science, which explain the Christ-mission of healing that is for all time.

Often it's assumed that good or poor health is random, that no one escapes the threat, if not the eventuality, of health problems. For instance, in the current international discussion of a flu epidemic, many feel vulnerable and frightened. So, the question arises: Is there truly a way to be safe from health threats? Yes, there is. It lies in seeing health in a spiritual context.

Jesus did this. He healed through the Christ, which he fully embraced as his spiritual identity. The Christ, meaning the spiritual nature of man, or man's God-given divinity, presents man—every one of us—as perfectly created and maintained by God. This consciousness of God sees and knows what God has made, and is characterized by goodness, reality, and permanence. The Christ consciousness is so bright with light, or spiritual clarity, that anything in its radius is enlightened, lifted, and conformed to it. We call this healing. But to the Christ-thought, it is seeing the only actuality that is, according to God.
