"Blessed Are the Peacemakers"

From the September 2006 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING FOR WORLD PEACE ON SEPTEMBER 21?"

That question concludes the documentary Peace One Day, about one man's quest to bring one day of cease-fire around the world (see p. 14).  That day, September 21, marks a moment when the member states of the United nations have agreed to put down arms.

Let's contemplate this: How much could the human race accomplish if, for just one day everyone not only stopped armed conflict, but stopped talking, stopped opinionating, and just listened—listened to the "still small voice" of God that the Bible assures us is not "in the earthquake," "not in the fire" (I Kings 19:11,12)—in fact, is not in turbulence of any kind.  What if—say, for even one half hour, as the book of Revelation tells us took place in heaven (8:1)—we all just tuned in to the power and magnitude of God's messages to each of us.  As Mary Baker Eddy noted: "The 'still, small voice' of scientific thought reaches over continent and ocean to the globe's remotest bound.  The inaudible voice of Truth is, to the human mind, 'as when a lion roareth.'  It is heard in the desert and in dark places of fear. It arouses the 'seven thunders' of evil and stirs their latent forces to utter the full diapason of secret tones. Then is the power of Truth demonstrated,—made manifest in the destruction of error"(Science and Health, p, 559).
