Life's Call and Response

From the August 2010 issue of The Christian Science Journal

From the primary notation
To orchestral chord's elation
One clear note the pitch to meet
Brings all to the mercy seat.

Quartets, octets, chamber groups,
Choruses, marching bands in troops
Throughout time and throughout space
Call and response brightens face upon face.

Samuel, Samuel, listen in the night,
Jonah, Jonah, don't put up a fight,
Noah, Noah, keep your vision sound,
Nehemiah, build up from the ground.

David, what is your request?
What above all do you desire best?
To judge and sing in the path of the ark,
Listen for Your song in the fog and the dark.

Ask, Elisha, ask away!
What do you want from your God today?
Spiritual vision! Double it up!
I'm ready, Lord, to drink from Your cup.

Shunammite woman, how goes your life?
Is there sorrow? Is there strife?
All is well, my thought is clear,
God always holds my family near.

Saul, why do you hurt My heirs?
No one is blessed when your temper flares.
Lord, forgive misguided deeds,
Let Christ clear sight at heaven's speed.

Known in all creation true,
Every day the song is new:
Living rhythm, living dance,
Life is call, and life response.
