Your Questions & Answers

Following the example set by the questions-and-answer columns in the early Journals, when Mary Baker Eddy was Editor, this column will respond to general queries from Journal readers with responses from Journal readers. You'll find information at the end of the column about how to submit questions.

Do you think Christian Science puts too much emphasis on Mary Baker Eddy?

From the October 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Do you think Christian Science puts too much emphasis on the Mary Baker Eddy relationship and her view on Church versus a one-on-one relationship with God?

From a participant at the Portland, Oregon, US, Youth Summit

A: As I think about this good question, it appears to me that so many struggle to understand who Mary Baker Eddy is, and to understand her place in Christian Science. We can’t separate her from the significance of founding this Church—but we certainly don’t worship her either. Nothing in her teachings or writings would ever lead us to think of her as a personal savior. The Church she founded is the Church of Christ, Scientist, not the church of Mrs. Eddy.
