The significance of God being one

From the October 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Scriptures consistently emphasize that God is one—as in “I am the Lord, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King” (Isa. 43:15). And in God’s overarching First Commandment, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Ex. 20:3).

The reality of one is that one is always one; it cannot be divided; it can never be less than whole. God is one indivisible whole, having not even one pinprick-sized fissure. And because God is whole, His entire creation is whole—and this is the actual, provable, and supreme Science of existence.

It’s important to understand God’s oneness because God, after all, is the Creator of everyone’s actual being as His spiritual image and likeness. As Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science, explained, “The divine Principle of the First Commandment bases the Science of being, by which man demonstrates health, holiness, and life eternal” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 340).
