Of Good Report

A psalm for South Africa

From the November 2013 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When praying the Lord’s Prayer every morning, I enfold the community in this prayer, knowing that God is not just my Father, but our Father—the Father of all the dear people in our country. I acknowledge our true identity as children of God, and that His children express honesty, gentleness, usefulness, kindness, and purity of thought.

Last year this prayer was put to the test. My husband and I were living in a complex of apartments in an area of South Africa where there has been a lot of crime. One afternoon two well-dressed men entered our home while I was listening to the Sunday service from The Mother Church on my iPad. One of the men asked me for the iPad, which I handed to him. I said to him, “You’re God’s perfect idea,” all the while seeing him as reflecting only God’s qualities. With that he ran out of the house with the iPad.

I affirmed that only harmony and peace could be expressed in our home, and I prayed with the 91st Psalm.
