No evidence of detached retinas

From the August 2013 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As a young man, I was hired to sing the solo on Sundays at a Christian Science church. Within a few weeks it was clear to me that this practical religion of divine Love was exactly what I wanted to pursue. Since that time, I’ve been afforded several opportunities to prove for myself “the truth of being.” The Bible sums it up better than I can say it: “Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: …Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing” (Isaiah 35:3–6).

That scriptural passage reminds me of a healing I had a few years ago. During a routine eye exam, the optometrist told me I had detached retinas in both eyes. He said that he didn’t know why I wasn’t already on my way to being blind, and that he was making an appointment with an ophthalmologist for me.

I thanked him and tried to allay his concern by assuring him I would follow through on getting a second opinion. So I went home and called a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful treatment. It was clear to me that I could responsibly rely on—and be healed by—the spiritual truths of Christian Science, since praying with the help of a practitioner had brought several healings over the years.
