I have been a Journal subscriber for years but have been remiss in telling you of the gratitude I feel for the work you all do to produce and share such a treasure to bless the world.
However, an article in the February Journal by Rosalie Dunbar, “ ‘To lighten mankind’ ,” has prompted me to write this note. Rosalie mentions the important work of The Christian Science Monitor—doing its work to enlighten mankind and open the door to Christian Science. And so I wish to share this story of how my family came into Christian Science through the Monitor as told by my mother in a letter penned to her children in 1987:
“I was a new bride and became critically ill; the prognosis was an embolism and the doctors gave me eight hours to live. My distraught husband did not want to lose his wife of six months, and so, unknown to me, he presented this dilemma to our neighbour. He knew this neighbour was a student of Christian Science and [Roy] had been a reader of the Monitor in his student days at the University of Toronto and admired the caliber of the paper. His thought was that since it was such a good paper, did the Christian Scientists really heal as they had testified? He asked our neighbour if Christian Science could heal me. The reply was a resounding yes! At this point, we knew nothing of the religion nor the role of a practitioner. Our neighbour of course was familiar and called one for us. I was healed of the malady, but knew not how it came about. The three physicians who cared for me remarked that it was a miraculous recovery, but that I would be wise never to embark on childbearing. Well, here I am, a mother of three.”
