Several years ago, I served as First Reader in my branch Church of Christ, Scientist. One Thursday evening, as I was preparing for the Sunday church service, I stood up from my chair, and my foot seemed to fold in half under me. It appeared that the foot was broken. I am grateful for the healing truths shared with me by a Christian Science friend who was with me at the time, which helped calm and focus my thought. These powerful laws of God helped me feel divine Love’s presence. Despite experiencing discomfort and not being able to put weight on my foot, I was grateful to be quickly freed of pain.
Two passages also came to me almost immediately. One is from the ninety-first Psalm, where the Psalmist writes: “For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone” (verses 11, 12). The other is “the scientific statement of being,” from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (see p. 468).
That evening, I continued to cherish these healing ideas and spent time with the Christian Science pastor, the Bible and Science and Health. I looked up a few passages from the Bible and Mrs. Eddy’s writings, and gave myself Christian Science treatment. Feeling safe and comfortable, I went to sleep. I didn’t experience discomfort that night and slept normally.
