Last summer my husband and I flew across the country to meet our daughter and son-in-law for a long-anticipated vacation. Early in the morning just before the last day of the trip, I began to feel some internal discomfort. By the next evening, the pain had escalated to the point that I needed the help of a Christian Science practitioner, who kindly stayed in touch and prayed with us through the night.
Although I was unable to pray much, on several occasions my husband put the phone to my ear so I could hear the practitioner speak the spiritual truths coming to her thought. As the hours went by, it seemed evident that I needed some additional care, so my husband arranged for me to stay at the closest Christian Science nursing facility, a six-hour drive from our vacation spot. A Christian Science nursing facility provides a place where individuals can receive practical care while they rely on prayer for healing. We were welcomed with open arms, and our family was accommodated in every way.
The challenges over the next few days, including my inability to eat or drink anything, seemed overwhelming. During this time, one of the Christian Science nurses who lovingly cared for me also sang hymns to me. Her beautiful voice brought me much comfort. She was firm in her reassurances of my safety in God’s care. Although I have been a lifelong Christian Scientist and have experienced healings of all kinds, I sometimes doubted whether I was up to the demands of this challenge. But prior proofs of healing and the Christian Science nurse’s encouraging words helped to sustain me.
