Communication is a feature of life at every stage of experience. To human sense, which has, at best, an incomplete view of reality, communication is a two-way street, with human beings sending and receiving messages both consciously and unconsciously. These messages are conveyed through avenues such as the spoken or written word, artistic expression, and body language.
But the original model for communication is wholly spiritual. As Mary Baker Eddy discovered through Christian Science, “The intercommunication is always from God to His idea, man” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 284).
The highest and most powerful form of communication, then, is not a product of our own capacity. It doesn’t originate in human intellect, and it isn’t actually conveyed through physical words, sounds, images, or any other mode of human expression. These modes are useful to the degree that they express moral and spiritual qualities, such as justice, honesty, patience, and compassion. But any communication that relies solely on human capacity is inherently flawed. Human communication is most effective when it expresses the qualities and ideas of God, the one divine Mind.
