One summer a few years ago, I noticed some red spots and bumps on one of my arms that began to itch. At first I didn’t pay much attention to them, but soon the spots covered both arms and the upper portion of my body. The itching became so intense that it often woke me in the middle of the night. I began wearing long sleeves to avoid drawing attention to the condition.
Christian Science teaches that God is the great Physician and that the remedy for illness is to learn the true, spiritual status of man as the peaceful, pure, and perfect reflection of God. I contacted a Christian Science practitioner, who lovingly gave Christian Science treatment in support of my prayers to see myself as God saw me—without spot or blemish of any kind. The practitioner and I spoke often, and he shared many passages from the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, including Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
Even when we feel unable to think clearly because a situation is so difficult, God’s angels speak to us and guide us. One night when I was awakened by severe itching, I prayed, “Father, show me what I need to know to be free from this distracting condition.” Immediately I recalled a statement from Science and Health: “A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive” (p. 463). Then two words came to my thought: “active nerves.”
