The consciousness of Love

From the April 2020 issue of The Christian Science Journal

More and more I’ve been working on staying in an absolute consciousness of Love during every moment, every interaction. One of the synonyms for God is Love, and as I continue my study of Christian Science, I grow more certain that Love is the only power and is governing every aspect of my life.

Mary Baker Eddy tells of the certainty of healing through divine Love in her seminal work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “Hold perpetually this thought,—that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being” (p. 496).

It was this consciousness of Love that enabled me to keep calm when I lost my wallet this past summer while out running an errand. I was visiting Los Angeles to do work on a house I’d inherited, and I went with a family member to a big-box store to buy supplies. I found what I needed, then wandered around the store window-shopping. When I went to pay for my purchase, I looked for my wallet, a rectangular cloth one with a big orange monarch butterfly on the front in needlepoint. It was missing. I retraced my steps several times.
