Of Good Report

Grace notes

From the December 2022 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One day the plastic band on my very cheap wristwatch broke, and I stopped into a jeweler to ask if they had a replacement. The salesperson basically laughed at me for such a silly request. Any bands they had probably cost more than the watch and weren’t really suitable.

As I lingered a bit, looking at the bands they did have, another customer entered the store and bought almost the same watch. Then she said she wanted a different band, which she purchased. As she left, I inquired of the salesperson what would happen to the band they had just taken off the other customer’s watch. It was, of course, just right for my watch, and I walked out with a new band. I don’t even think they charged me for it.

This sweet experience occurred at a time in my life when our daughter was a toddler and I felt overwhelmed with what seemed like major challenges at home, including discord in my marriage. I was in a constant state of turmoil and found it very hard to enjoy any peace. Praying earnestly about the issues, I acknowledged that God, divine Mind and Love, was the only power and was governing each of us and every detail. I also had the help of various Christian Science practitioners from time to time, but I still felt an almost constant sense of stress.
