“Bless the past”

From the May 2022 issue of The Christian Science Journal

“Bless the past.” That new idea, shared by a friend, was a powerful wake-up call to me.

We’ve all been hurt at times—and hurtful to others. But instead of holding on to the hurt, it’s possible for us to re-see those past events—to look at them in a spiritual light.

In her book Retrospection and Introspection, Mary Baker Eddy writes, “. . . our material, mortal history is but the record of dreams, not of man’s real existence, and the dream has no place in the Science of being.” She goes on, “The human history needs to be revised, and the material record expunged.” And she gives the rationale for doing this revising when she adds, “The real man is not of the dust, nor is he ever created through the flesh; for his father and mother are the one Spirit, and his brethren are all the children of one parent, the eternal good” (pp. 21, 22).
