Does God guide us in matters of the heart?

From the February 2021 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Have you ever wondered whether the right person for a lifelong commitment would ever come along? How would you recognize this person? There are certainly matchmaking services with questionnaires to draw people together who have kindred tastes and interests. But how do you really know in your heart whether someone is a right match for you?

You can ask God for guidance. This may sound silly in today’s social climate. There is a perception that by a quirk of fate some people are meant to be happy and fulfilled, while others, through no fault of their own, end up alone and lonely. Popular culture would also have you believe that you need a soul mate in order to be complete. But rather than going along with those misconceptions, you can turn to God and listen, through what Christian Science terms your “spiritual sense,” to what God is telling your heart.

Spiritual sense perceives spiritual qualities, instead of outward appearances—qualities such as intelligence, kindness, temperance, unselfishness, joy, humor, and especially love for God or good. In First Corinthians 2:9, we read: “As it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” A little further, Paul’s letter reads, “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God” (I Corinthians 2:12).
