Hanging by a thread?

From the February 2021 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A few years ago I was faced with challenges at home, at the school where I teach, and in many other areas. I felt as though I were hanging by a thread.

I often spent my hour-long commute to and from work praying for inspiration and healing. At other times I turned to the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy for support and guidance. But I still felt that “thread” was being stretched thin.

One morning as I got into my car to go to work, I noticed that a spider had spun a web between the side-view mirror and the car door. It didn’t seem to be a very good place for a web, since a large part of my commute is at higher speeds on the expressway.

I didn’t think any more about it as I went on my way. That evening, as I got into my car to return home, I noticed the spider and the web were still there! And sure enough, both spider and web made the journey home safely. Over the next few days, checking for the spider and web became part of my daily routine. I marveled at the fortitude of the spider and the strength of the silk that made and held the web in place.

It occurred to me that if the thread I was hanging by in my struggles was as strong as that spider’s, then I, too, was safe and secure. I was being upheld by my unbroken connection to my Father-Mother God, and I could meet every challenge with this assurance and strength. A favorite Bible verse came to mind: “The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore” (Psalms 121:8).

I smiled thinking that my prayers were answered by watching a little spider demonstrating that biblical promise. Although the responsibilities at home and work continued, all sense of burden dropped away, and I was able to perform my duties with joy and freedom.
