A few months after I began to study Christian Science, my youngest child became ill with a high fever and an alarming skin condition all over his body. I did everything a mother would to best care for her child in such circumstances, and I made the boy as comfortable as possible.
During this time, the prayers of a Christian Scientist who had supported my first steps in Christian Science were a tremendous help. Her spirituality and trust in God’s care were deeply encouraging to me. My husband, though afraid himself, was supportive of my desire to rely on Christian Science for healing. But after praying for the child and seeing no improvement, I felt overwhelmed with fear.
One morning before dawn I stood at the window praying, and I asked God for guidance. Soon I felt uplifted and inspired. The thought came to me to thank God for His daughter Mary Baker Eddy, because she had discovered, through her deep love and systematic study of the Bible, the universal truths of Christian Science that heal mankind. I gave heartfelt thanks for her selflessness and love in sharing her discovery with the world. Great peace came over me.
