Every individual carries in thought certain controlling concepts which shape his actions and experience. Because of their dominant role they are in effect "gods," though they may not be concerned with any formal religion.
After the ascension of Jesus the disciples, who had gone with him to Bethany, "returned to Jerusalem with great joy: and were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. " Luke 24:52, 53; Christian Scientists today are experiencing the joy of discipleship in practicing the teachings of their Master.
Economics, as defined by Harold Sloan in A Dictionary of Economics , is "that body of knowledge which treats of the creation and appropriation of goods and services for the satisfaction of human wants. " Spiritually considered, scientific economics treats of the laws of God, operating through self-enforcing Principle, supplying through divine intelligence all good.
Which has dominion, good or evil? Christian Science teaches that good has. It maintains that good's dominion can be proven in the face of disease, death, sin, failure, injustice, fear, confusion, limitation, hatred, deceit, envy, cynicism, boredom, insecurity, war, and other etceteras of evil.
Christians in general believe that life continues after death. They accept that aspect of immortality.
Shortly before his crucifixion, when speaking with his disciples of the overturning that would attend the second coming of the Christ, our Master, Christ Jesus, said, "When ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled. " Mark 13:7; The human need for the quiet understanding and assurance that Jesus required of his disciples is felt today on many sides as the spiritual forces at work in the world are bringing the evil elements in human nature to the surface to be destroyed.
Everything of benefit and blessing to mankind has come through the vision, purpose, and untiring work of individuals. And whether they have been reformers or pioneers, they have had such outstanding qualities of character as independence, integrity, single-mindedness, persistence, unselfed love, and great courage in the face of opposition and persecution.
Christian Science teaches that angels are God's messengers, or holy thoughts imparted from the divine Mind to human consciousness. When we apply this fact to interpret spiritually the angel visitations in the Easter story, the tender, comforting love of God for all His children permeates that drama anew.
Individuals can and do rise into the dawning light of spiritual resurrection when they are willing to lay on the altar what seems to be their most precious human possession—the mortal sense of self. This willingness must have as its constant companions uncompromising integrity, humility, and a sincere desire to put off the graveclothes of self-indulgence and self-justification.
