There is a phase in a child's development which is familiar to many parents and provides food for thought in considering our progress as we ourselves grow up in the understanding of Christian Science. This particular phase comes when a little child is eager to do things for himself.

Certainly no individual in a Church of Christ, Scientist, is more important to the future of Christian Science than the Sunday School teacher. It is he who is assigned the task of laying the foundations of spiritual understanding for those who will become practitioners, Readers, lecturers, and branch church workers—those who will carry on the Christian Science movement in the years to come.

In the twenty-third chapter of II Samuel there is a list of the heroes of the time of David. Among these there is mention of three men who displayed outstanding heroism in penetrating behind the enemy's lines to bring the king water from the well of Bethlehem.

Christ Jesus once told a parable of a man who sowed good seed in his field. At night an enemy came and sowed tares, which grew up together with the wheat.

Good church government is the natural outcome of good self-government. Good self-government, widely practiced, promotes the smooth operation of the organizational activities of church.

Politicians know that political propaganda can influence voters. That is why, at election time, millions of dollars are poured into radio, television, and newspaper publicity.

Human experience is fraught with the constant necessity of making decisions. Though these range from the simple to the complex, they all present a challenge to one's sense of peace and harmony.

Democracy—government by consent of the governed—is crucial to Christian Science and to Christian Scientists, not just something nice, but crucial. How crucial? It can be said with assurance that the practice of distinctly democratic government enlarges the capacity of Christian Scientists to practice Christian Science.

The mental atmosphere of a nation is determined by its government. When integrity and justice rule, the rights of the individual and of the country are protected, and freedom reigns.
