Writing to the Superintendent and teachers of The Mother Church Sunday School, Mary Baker Eddy says (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 230 ), "It is a joy to know that they who are faithful over foundational trusts, such as the Christian education of the dear children, will reap the reward of rightness, rise in the scale of being, and realize at last their Master's promise, 'And they shall be all taught of God.
Using the power of Spirit or immortal Mind alone by which to heal sin and bodily disease and ultimately to lay off his corporeal body, Christ Jesus showed that matter, including the mortal body, is composed solely of unreal material beliefs. Before his followers can successfully prove the unreality of sin and bodily disease by the power of Spirit, or immortal Mind, alone, they too must understand matter to be but mortal belief.
" Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?" ( John 11:26.
The value to humanity of gaining the correct concept of God, hence of His will, can scarcely be estimated. The emergence of the true idea of God culminated in Jesus' perfect interpretation of God and His will and was shown forth in his healing and redemptive ministry.
When Christ Jesus gave the two great commandments ( Matt. 22:37, 39 ), "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind," and, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself," he declared, "On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
The disciples once asked the Master ( Matt. 18:1 ), "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" Jesus answered by calling a little child to him and telling the disciples that they must become as little children if they would enter the kingdom of heaven.
No illness, no appearance of lack or of inharmony can withstand the healing power of the Christ, Truth, as revealed in Christian Science. Healing occurs through the knowing and applying of this Truth.
Christian Science is practical. It operates quickly and effectively when it is understood and correctly applied.
At the darkest hour in the earthly experience of our Lord and Master, Christ Jesus, when his mission was misunderstood and he was facing desertion and the ordeal of the cross, he turned away from earth and found refuge in divine Love. It is recorded in the twenty-second chapter of Luke's Gospel that, as Jesus prayed for divine guidance at this crucial time, "there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.
In time past the temple was considered a place of safety for all who sought refuge there. A man pursued by the law might, whether innocent or guilty, throw himself upon the steps of the church and so for a period find sanctuary.
