God Is Love

Lost Hagar knew, when loomed the well With water bubbling in, And Moses, too, when manna fell In wilderness of Sin; The widow guessed as oil and meal Began to freely pour; The palsied one whose hand did feel A growing strength once more. They each one knew that blessed sign Was sent from Him above Gently to show with grace divine That God, our God, is Love.

"The Lord looketh on the heart"

Vain human pride of intellect Builds only on the sand. To calculate God's mighty works I need to understand And truly feel the love I talk; Then will religion be Within my heart and not my head, And Christ will come to me.

Holy Ground

How shall my heart continue to rejoice Upon this battlefield of hate and fear? The noise of conflict drowns the still small voice That hitherto has whispered, "God is here. " Lift up your eyes, dear child, and you will see The angels of His presence all around; Then as the smoke of battle clears away You'll find that where you stand is holy ground.

The New Jerusalem Is Come

The New Jerusalem is come, That city built foursquare, Where perfect man in Science dwells Within his Father's care. The New Jerusalem is come, And all may enter in Who wash their robes in righteousness And purge their hearts of sin.

The Ascension

We all knew he was different that day. We had known him restful, with a captured rest Seized in the heat of conflict; known him gay And joyful, when the overmastering zest Of working for the Father overcame The cross's shadow; we had felt his power, Given from above, leap like a mighty flame To blast the secret root of evil's flower.

The Centurion

I spent  my life in learning to obey Until I was promoted from the rank, And now this garrison is my command; My soldiers do exactly as I say. Capernaum can offer grateful thanks That order is my law—and there I stand.

Invulnerable

Nothing can injure Love. O heart, know this! The sting is self, seeking its own delight.

The Key

We knew our Bible well, chapter and verse. From childhood's days, and would with pride declaim Psalm after psalm, and accurately rehearse The stories of the blind, deaf, dumb, and lame.

In the Temple

Strong, Jesus' words, Stinging, like lash of whips. To the dulled ears of those who bought and sold, And those who would handle with kid gloves, Delicately, with compromise, false tact— Considerate of favor, richer tithes— The sheep-clothed traffickers In impure thoughts and aims, Whom he named thieves.

The Babe to Cherish

O Life divine, help us to nourish it: With Love divine teach us to cherish it. By Thy great wisdom ever protecting Until, all Thy power and perfection reflecting— God's manhood and womanhood clearly revealing— All the world shall behold it: The child of Christ-healing!
