Testimonies of Healing
When I was thirteen years old my parents became interested in Christian Science and I was remarkably healed. At that time I was partially deaf and growing worse every day, although I had been under the best of medical treatment for over two years.
Christian Science was brought to my attention seven years ago, but it was over a year before I became interested. I was a victim of the stammering habit, a trouble which I believe is as hard to endure as serious illness, on account of the constant embarrassment.
With a heart full of gratitude I wish to tell of the many blessings which God has sent me. Since childhood I had been ill as a result of a nervous disease through which, as was discovered later, I had also become short-sighted.
WHEN thought reverts to the past years of my earthly experience and comparison is made of the last five years—within which period Truth has been regenerating my consciousness—with those turbulent, unknowing, unseeing, self-seeking and ungrateful preceding years, it is little wonder that my heart offers its deepest gratitude to our known God. It is beyond the power of the human mind fully to grasp, much less adequately express, the realization of an ever developing and encompassing joy and thanksgiving for spiritual freedom; therefore must our works, engendered of gratitude, faith, and true understanding, attest the reflection of that Life, Truth, and Love which beckoned the multitudes to the teaching of our beloved Master, and caused his followers to accept of their vital import.
When first I heard of Christian Science I was bitterly opposed to it. I thought it could not be right, because it was not related to the church to which I belonged, but I took up the study of it to prove to a friend who was getting interested how illogical it was, and I knew the only way to be able to argue with her was to know something about it.
I wish to bear testimony to the healing power of Christian Science. I had been a great sufferer from a serious stomach trouble for more than forty years and was afraid of everything I ate.
I have many times wished to write of my experience in Christian Science, especially of my first healing, because it may prove of great benefit to some one who is seeking earnestly to be rid of "divers diseases. " In 1896 I was advised to go under an operation for what was pronounced a malignant growth which was very painful, having spread rapidly from the first.
A sense of gratitude prompts me to say that Christian Science brought me my first glimpse of anything certain in the way of happiness and health. It immediately gave me a fixed thought-basis, from which intelligently to work out what we call "life's problems," which then seemed desperately complex.
Over two years ago, I was greatly prejudiced against what I thought Christian Science to be. I had been ill for some years, with a severe stomach trouble, nervousness, despondency, and many other physical ailments.
I cannot withhold my expression of deep gratitude for the inspiration and the healing which have come to me through Christian Science. For ten years I suffered from a severe nervous trouble and had been successively under the care of various physicians and medical authorities, yet there was no improvement ; on the contrary, my suffering increased with every year.
