Testimonies of Healing
With a heart full of love and gratitude to God, and to His messenger for this age, Mrs. Eddy, I bear witness to the saving and healing power of Christian Science.
Christian Science healing was first brought to my attention through taking a medical patient to a Christian Science practitioner for healing, after all material means had failed. During a period of eight years I had seen the patient suffer physically and mentally from an incurable disease according to materia medica.
I desire to testify to the efficacy of the power of Truth to overcome and destroy error. In January, 1907, my mother was taken ill with a severe bronchial trouble.
After years of treatment for mental and physical trouble under the best physicians, my case was pronounced a hopeless one, and I was sentenced to years of suffering, which forced me to leave school. My parents finally had me try Christian Science, as a last resort.
For some time I have felt called to send my testimony to the Field, thinking to benefit some who are struggling in the dark, as was I. It is now seven years since I turned to this glorious truth for its healing power.
Truly "the heart knoweth his own bitterness; and a stranger doth not intermeddle with his joy. " Just as no one can measure the extent of another's suffering, so it is impossible to give an adequate idea of the happiness of release from it.
Through the help of Christian Science I have been healed of what is popularly termed an incurable disease. No preconceived favorable impression of Christian Science prompted me to seek this relief or aided me in adjusting my thought to its radical claims; on the contrary I was prejudiced against what I thought it was, to a degree of which I now have ample reason to be ashamed.
Four years ago I was confined to my home, having been obliged to give up work entirely, as I was suffering from lung trouble in an advanced stage. By the advice of my physician I consulted a noted specialist in Boston, who at the time was head of the examination board of a sanitarium for such cases as mine.
With joy and thankgiving I would express my gratitude for the truth revealed in Christian Science. When despondent because of physical illness, and yearning for some satisfying explanation of the Bible, I turned to this truth, to be rewarded within a short time by the proof that the Bible is demonstrably true, that there is a God who is Love, and has power to heal.
It is always interesting to hear how and why different people are brought into a knowledge of Christian Science, and it is with this thought, as well as a feeling of gratitude for blessings received, that I avail myself of the privilege to tell the readers of the Journal why I became a student of this inspiring truth. Six years ago I left Plymouth, England, where I had long been an active worker in an orthodox church—from a teacher in the Sunday School to a local preacher, as well as a Christian Endeavor worker, and also in many other phases of the church work.
