For several years I was troubled with what I believe is called "consumption of the blood." My blood apparently dried up until I would be perfectly colorless, even to my lips, and so weak that to exert myself, even to talk, would exhaust me. I doctored with the best physician in our town, taking medicine three and four times a day during the greater part of ten years. I would improve for a time, but as soon as I ceased taking medicine I would be down in bed again.
Three years ago this July I went to Salt Lake City for a year's visit with relatives. Before starting on my trip my doctor said to me, "I am glad you are going to take this trip. Do not take any medicine with you, for if that climate doesn't cure you, nothing will." So I threw away all my medicine and have never taken any since. For a few months I improved.
At that time a relative who was blind began taking Christian Science treatment, and it was my duty to take her to the practitioner's house where I was asked to read aloud to the waiting patients, also to read Science and Health to my relative. In this way I became interested, and in February, when I was suddenly taken ill, worse than I had ever been, I wanted to take Christian Science treatment, but was forbidden to do so. I took no medicine and grew weaker daily until I was brought home in July, not expected to live. I lingered until November, and not until a physician said I could not possibly live three weeks, could I gain the consent to have Christian Science treatment. I took two weeks' treatment in Omaha and was benefited from the first. After the first treatment I walked over a mile, and have never gone to bed in the daytime from that hour to this.
