SELF-CONDEMNATION

From the March 1904 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Self-Knowledge is one of the requirements of Wisdom. The man most liable to think and to do wrong is one who knows the least about himself. In proportion as we gain a correct and scientific estimate of ourselves do we acquire the ability and power to think and to do right. To "put on the whole armor of God" and "be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might," each must know himself and his relation to God. Christian Science makes this achievement possible.

One of the greatest foes to our progress is self-condemnation, and it needs to be carefully watched and guarded against. The individual who yields to this temptation unfits himself for systematic work and often becomes his own worst enemy. There may be more deplorable conditions of thought, but there are none that will sooner incapacitate one for scientific warfare than that of unjust self-condemnation, because of the suffering it brings.

"Happy is he that condemneth not himself," the Scripture says. This thought came to the writer some years ago while laboring under the belief of unjust censure, and the peace and light that came with it have served as a constant reminder ever since. He has seen numerous cases of healing brought about where the thought of self-condemnation was the leading error that needed to be uncovered and destroyed.
