Previous to 1897 I knew nothing about Christian Science and heard little in its favor. About that time I procured the loan of the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, from a friend in Chicago, and read it. I then ignorantly thought I saw how some of its trenchant statements of truth applied more directly to many of my acquaintances than to myself; yet after reading it I could not rid myself of the feeling that there was an undefined something in it for me. I had for about fifteen years been a great sufferer from almost all forms of stomach trouble, to such an extent that the most powerful medicines had no effect. After reading this book I ceased following a system of dieting and exercising, by which I had obtained for a short time temporary relief, with the result that in about a week I was a very sick man. My stomach troubles returned in an aggravated form. By direction of a friend in Chicago, where I was then residing, I went to a practitioner, and left her home in a short time, entirely cured, much to my astonishment. I gratefully accepted the healing, and had no return of my old enemy, but gave no further heed to Christian Science other than attending the Sunday services two or three times.
Afterwards, on Christmas night, 1898, I was attacked by a severe complaint, and the pain was acute and continuous. I called a medical doctor, and after three days' treatment he suggested a surgical operation. This trouble was so severe that I had been confined to the house, but feeling anxious in regard to a business matter, I dragged myself to the office. As soon as my associate saw me he insisted upon my returning to my lodgings at once, saying, "You are a very sick man." I have since had the impression that he thought I might expire at any moment. Strange to say, I had forgotten all about my former healing through Christian Science, until on my way home I noticed the sign of what was then the Christian Science Dispensary. I went to the rooms, was treated, and instantaneously healed. In April of 1899 I purchased a copy of Science and Health and commenced its study, taking treatment at the time from a Scientist for relief from business troubles that had for some time overwhelmed me, and from which I could see no means of extricating myself. As a result of such treatment and study every difficulty has been removed and my business troubles that loomed up so threateningly have all been met and disposed of. For many years I had been a user of intoxicating liquors to excess and a heavy smoker, my whiskey and cigar bills exceeding my household expenses. While I was being treated for the business troubles I was entirely freed from both these harmful habits, and though nearly four years have elapsed I have had no desire for either since.
These are a few of the many benefits I have received from Christian Science treatment and the study of our textbook. From experience I can truly recommend its study to all sufferers. Its statements are true and by its Science all diseases, both mental and physical, can be eradicated. Of this I have had many proofs besides the instances narrated.
