Testimonies of Healing

My heart is indeed filled with gratitude for what...

From the May 1905 issue of The Christian Science Journal

My heart is indeed filled with gratitude for what Christian Science has done for me. It is now about thirteen months since I began treatments. I was suffering—and how I did suffer, to sense—from nervous prostration, trouble with my heart, indigestion, and other ailments. I had many different doctors, and I am sure they did what they could for me; I appreciate their efforts, but these seemed of no use, for the medicine only relieved me for a time, and back again I would go to darkness and suffering worse than before. One doctor then said a trip abroad would help me; so abroad I went, coming home fairly well, and as I thought at the time, on the road to recovery; but it was only temporary, for after a short time I grew worse. I then consulted one specialist after another, but in each case the relief was only temporary. In five years I took a great quantity of medicine, but after this I was in such a condition that I could hardly walk, could not sleep, and it was with great difficulty that I ate even a piece of bread or drank a glass of milk. My business having been neglected, I was without any money at all. How true it is that man's extremity is God's opportunity. I now heard of Christian Science, and although I did not have much faith in it, not knowing what it was, still I wanted to try it, as I did so want to get well. After receiving one or two treatments I went to the reading room of the church, two people helping me to get there. The treatment I received there helped me wonderfully, and after a few treatments I was on the road to recovery. I can truthfully say now that I am completely healed, not only physically and mentally, but morally and financially as well.

Some time before being treated in Christian Science, I was subjected to the examination imposed on applicants for life insurance, but was not accepted on account of my heart. Since being treated in Science, I have been examined, not only by the same company but by the same doctors, and I might add one or two more, as the former ones seemed a little puzzled to find me in such perfect health. They asked me what I had done, and I regret to say, that being so young in Science, only a few months, and with four or five doctors present, I was afraid to mention Christian Science, but I would tell them to-day if I had the opportunity. It seemed as if they were trying to saddle me with the old ailments, but after taking me to the head doctor of the institution, I was pronounced by him a specimen of good health, and was afterward told by the agent applying for my insurance that they would take me for any amount. I have gained nearly thirty pounds and am strong and muscular, in fact some of my friends look at me in astonishment and want to know how I developed such muscle.

After all this, words are indeed inadequate to express my gratitude to God, and to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy. God bless her for all that she has done and is doing to lead us out of the wilderness into the glorious kingdom of heaven which she has plainly shown is within us. I am grateful to all the dear ones who have helped me to understand this beautiful truth. I have had many hard battles, but how thankful I am to have had them. I would not wish to have been spared one moment of the suffering that has led me to find God and brought me closer to Him. My desire now is to prove my gratitude by deeds, and in living what I have been taught, and I know that divine Love will ever guide me upward and onward to do His will.
