I did not come into Christian Science through the door of physical healing for myself, but through the remarkable healing of my mother. Eighteen years ago she was so ill with cancer of the stomach that materia medica declared her case to be hopeless, and that she could not possibly live longer than six weeks. Her only nourishment consisted of three spoonfuls of milk a day. At this time her pastor, having heard of some very wonderful cures in Christian Science, confided the marvelous story to her and asked her if she would not like to try it, as a last resort. She was of course very anxious to remain with us, and consented. He then told her that if she would not let his part in it be known, he would himself go to a city thirty miles distant and secure absent treatment for her.
He did so, with the result that on the third morning, upon my going into her room and asking her how she felt, she replied, "I have just been thinking that I do not feel anything the matter with me at all. You do not suppose it could be that new treatment that Brother asked ——for me, do you?" I told her it certainly was not due to the old treatment, for the doctor was doing nothing for her.
In a few moments the cancerous growth passed from her. I put it in some water for the purpose of showing it to the doctor when he made his regular morning call. When I returned to the room mother had fallen asleep. I slipped out very quietly and closed the door, and shortly afterward the doctor came. I told him she was sleeping, and he said, "Poor woman, do not disturb her, there is absolutely nothing that I can do, and it is a blessing that she can forget her misery for a while."
