Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.— Jesus.
IT is impossible to doubt that to-day the selfish commercialism— the glamour of materialism, of extravagant display, luxury, greed, and avarice, of political and social corruption —which throughout the history of the race has marked the decadence of empires, is facing us again. Looking for a continuous repetition of the fall of empires and nations under this baneful influence, we might despair, fearing, in sad pessimism, that because a condition has been, it must continue to be, were it not that under, through, and above this current of materialism, there is heard the "still, small voice," whispering the deathless truth of the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man, that Love is the eternal, omnipotent, divine Principle of all being, and must be, will be, and is manifested. Thus we catch glimpses of a widespread altruistic spirit and love-forces; divine justice is seen to be compelling reforms, pulling down and overturning until love and mercy are met together and eternal Right is enthroned.
To optimistic thought the divine leaven is wondrously working; great dynasties are crumbling before the spiritual democracy introduced by Jesus and established through Christian Science at this present hour, though we but dimly see as yet the outcome and full meaning of each progressive step in a movement which is destined to fulfil the prophecy of the permanent establishment of the kingdom of God on earth,— the revelation of the new heaven and the new earth.
