A little more than three years ago Christian Science was brought into our home through physical necessity. My wife, who was a delicate woman, was troubled with an abnormal growth as well as hernia. The hernia was such an aggravated one that the family physician said if she were to take a step without having on a truss, it would endanger her life. The internal growth was attended with such pain that an incessant prayer for relief by death was on her lips. The best medical assistance was sought in Chicago, where we then resided, but all they could advise was a surgical operation. In addition to her other troubles her heart had been affected since childhood, and she was often compelled to sit up in bed all night. As this condition would sometimes continue for several days and nights, we felt that she could not stand the operation. The situation with us seemed desperate, with death staring us in the face. My wife could not move, and had to be carried to and from her bed.
I knew a gentleman who was said to be a Christian Scientist, and whom I had always found cheerful and affable, and it occurred to me that this friend might help us in our distress. A meeting was arranged, and it was decided to have a Christian Science practitioner take charge of the case. Prior to the time the practitioner was expected my wife was placed in a large chair. When the lady came my wife frankly told her that she knew nothing about Christian Science, therefore could not believe in it. She was told she could not be expected to believe in something she knew nothing about; the only requirement was, that she should entertain no antagonistic thoughts.
I went into an adjoining room, and had been reading the evening paper about fifteen minutes when my wife came walking into the room. I shall never forget the happy smile which indicated that she had been healed. The pain was gone; the support was thrown away, and there has been no further use for it. Every drop of medicine was thrown out, and no material remedies have been used in my family since. Neuralgia in its severest forms, chills and fever, the tobacco habit, and many other ills have been overcome through Christian Science.
