[Translated from the German.]
In 1907 I contracted a severe cough and also had a serious attack of kidney disease, from which I had been a sufferer for twenty years. I called a physician, who prescribed various medicines, but nothing took effect. He said I should go into the country; but I grew more and more miserable, could neither eat, sleep, sit, nor lie down, and was very emaciated.
I then heard of Christian Science. An acquaintance gave me Der Herald der Christian Science to read, and I attended the church services regularly, deriving much inward satisfaction therefrom. I took a trip into the mountains while Christian Science treatment was being given me. The healing was slow, which was well for me, as I could thereby enter more deeply into the subject of Christian Science. I suffered from difficulty in breathing and could walk scarcely twenty steps without stopping. Swollen feet were added, but I did not lose my courage and faith in God. Five weeks later I returned to Dresden and worked as best I could with my practitioner, and the more I strove to put off the old man and become a new man, the quicker did the healing come to me. One trouble after another gradually disappeared, so that I became a thoroughly healthy man. Formerly an excessive smoker, I could not bear to see tobacco after the first reading of Der Herald, much less could I use it.
