GUIDANCE AND PROTECTION

From the December 1909 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The wise man says, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy path." I have often thought that if every Christian Scientist were to tell of the obstacles overcome in making the demonstration to come from their far-away homes to visit our dear Mother Church, there would be many interesting stories to read. I consider my own demonstration in going to Boston more remarkable than any physical healing I could have had. Being a working woman, and with very irregular work, I was not. humanly speaking, financially able to go, and at first thought it seemed impossible.

At about the time when it became clear to me (in February, 1906) that I should go on to the dedication of The Mother Church, I was preparing to move from Cincinnati, O., where I had resided for seventeen years, to Indianapolis, my former home. This change entailed considerable expense, but notwithstanding this, and the fact that I was now almost a stranger in Indianapolis, I had in a few months, through the daily study and application of our Leader's teachings, so demonstrated my way that I had more work than I could do, and was free to go, so far as the financial part was concerned. Then a fear of making the trip alone, and the fact that I did not know any one in Boston, began to trouble me, as I was wholly unaccustomed to traveling alone; but I came to see that with Truth to guide and protect me I could do it.

When it was announced in the Sentinel that there would be a committee in Boston to assist visitors to get their rooms, this relieved me much, and I saw that divine Love had provided for my need. I had written to a Scientist friend in Cincinnati that I had decided to go to Boston, but did not know whether I would have any one to travel with or not. By the next mail my friend wrote that a friend of hers, whom I had met only once, was also going to Boston, had already engaged her room directly across from the church, and would be pleased to have me share it with her and also to share her berth on the train. Explicit directions were given about starting and where to meet the train, which was to be a special, filled with Scientists; and I looked forward with much pleasure to making the trip with them. For all these proofs of the Father's loving care I was more grateful than I can tell.
