When I first heard of Christian Science...

From the September 1916 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I first heard of Christian Science a few years ago, I never thought that its teachings would become of such vital importance to me as has since proved to be the case. While it was taken up more out of curiosity than because of any apparent physical need, the study of our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, has entirely freed me from attacks of throat trouble which recurred regularly every winter. Minor ailments, such as colds, have also been quickly overcome.

Some time ago I had a sudden attack of severe pain in the back,—so intense that a great sense of fear came over me and I was unable to handle the case myself. I managed to telephone to a Christian Science practitioner, and through her help the pain soon grew less, so that it was possible for me to return home without assistance. That night I slept well, and the following morning went to business as usual. The slight pain which still persisted soon vanished. There has been no return of the trouble and my health has since been perfect in every respect.

My gratitude for physical well-being is naturally great, but I am far more grateful for the moral and spiritual help received. While all men are glad to give up any sense of pain in matter, they are by no means so willing to part with their sense of pleasure in matter. This has been the case with me, and while there are still many faults to be overcome, Christian Science is gradually but surely transforming me by the renewing of the mind. It has changed my whole outlook on life and has given me a true concept of God, so that instead of fearing Him, as before, I cannot help loving Him now. The Bible, which I had seldom touched since boyhood, has become a book of deep interest to me since Science and Health has unlocked its treasures.
