LONGEVITY

From the September 1916 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THAT poet had a glimpse of scientific truth who wrote:—

Age is opportunity no less
Than youth itself, though in another dress,
And as the evening twilight fades away
The sky is filled with stars, invisible by day.

Time should be recognized only as an opportunity to know more of God, or good. On page 246 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes: "The measurement of life by solar years robs youth and gives ugliness to age. . . . Man, governed by immortal Mind, is always beautiful and grand. Each succeeding year unfolds wisdom, beauty, and holiness." It is a false mortal theory which asserts that a man's length of life is limited to a certain period of time, a span of years. When the earth follows in its orbit once entirely around the sun, it is termed the passage of one year of time; but why should not the earth go around the sun a thousand times, or even a million times, without any appreciable effect on the life of man? The mere movement of the earth can have no effect; the universal thought of mankind concerning the influence of the passage of the years is the cause of any effect therefrom.
