About eight years ago this spring I turned very earnestly to Christian Science. For five years I had owned the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, but being unwilling to follow its teachings I had gained no understanding from the little reading I had done. When I was really ready for Science I went to a practitioner, and with the second treatment came the healing of gallstones. Many other healings followed, some with the help of a practitioner, others through my own study and mental work.
I wish to relate one demonstration that occurred about six months after coming into Christian Science. One day in cleaning the globe over the table in my dining room, instead of taking out the large incandescent bulb I drew the globe down over it. I tried to replace it in the same way but it fitted very tightly, and with my face close to the work I pushed the globe, first gently, then very urgently. Suddenly the bulb burst with a loud report, and hundreds of tiny pieces of glass were blown with great force all about my face and head and into my eyes. A friend who had become interested in Christian Science when I did, was in the next room, and hearing the noise he rushed in. I asked him to telephone to a doctor at once, as I feared my sight was gone. I shall never forget his reply: " 'Phone a doctor! Have you forgotten that you are studying Christian Science?" With that we turned absolutely to God for help. All fear left me. My face was plunged into a bowl of water, and I washed the glass out of my eyes. For days afterwards tiny pieces worked to the corners of the eyes and were removed. All this was done without the slightest injury. The healing has been permanent and my sight is clear and sound. Our so-called material sight is precious and I am deeply grateful for this wonderful demonstration of God's care; but more so for the spiritual sight which was then realized and has continued to come with each earnest effort to apply the truth.—Portland, Maine.
