As a boy I received my early religious training from good Christian parents, but when still in high school I began to lose confidence in their religion, because it did not give me the spiritual food for which I longed. At the age of twenty I went out into the world, and it was not long before I began to drift with the class that was seeking whatever enjoyment might be found in material pleasures. For nearly ten years I did not attend any church services, and all seemed to go pretty well until a severe trial came into my life.
After resorting to the best of material means for over a year, seeking the restoration to health of a loved one, Christian Science was presented, and here I found the "pearl of great price." A very few treatments convinced me that this was the primitive religion of which I had studied when a boy in Sunday school. After the practitioner had been coming to our home two weeks, I attended a Sunday morning service, at which I was healed of profanity, a habit which had been formed many years before, and after studying Science and Health for six months I was healed of the smoking habit, to which I had been a slave for thirteen years.
One forenoon soon after taking up this study I was standing at the side of a metal garage where an inventor was working on a machine to recharge acetylene gas tanks. Apparently without any reason I suddenly moved away, and about a minute afterwards a valve on the engine blew off. The garage was practically blown down, and the side where I had been standing was torn away. This experience and many others, one of which I shall speak of, have proved to me that God ever takes care of those who are trusting in Him.
