A little more than four years ago I was healed by reading the Christian Science Sentinel. For a year and a half I had been taking medicine four times a day for what the doctors said was rheumatism in my head. My head was so bad that I could not read or sew more than an hour at a time; then I would have to lie down, and my neck was so stiff I could hardly move it. I had known of Christian Science for some years, but from what I heard the preachers say of it I thought there was no good in it, so had nothing to do with it. When my niece, who was a Christian Scientist, made the remark to me that if I would read Science and Health it might help me, I turned my head from her and smiled to think that just reading could help me, but it set me to thinking.
I became lame and could hardly get around the house, and one day this thought came to me: What do I know about Christian Science but what I have heard other people, who were opposed to it, say? So I made up my mind if my niece would let me take her copy of Science and Health I would see for myself what the doctrine was; so I sent for it. She sent word back in two days that she would send it to me, and also sent me the Sentinel and Journal. I took the Sentinel and lay down and read it through from cover to cover, then took up the Journal. I read for more than three hours and neither my head nor eyes hurt at all, and when I got up my lameness was gone, and from that day I have used my eyes all day making tatting, crocheting, sewing, or reading. I took my medicine the next day, but I knew that it must be given up if I wanted Science, and from that day I have not tasted medicine. I have been able to help myself a few times and have had help a few times and it was always given so kindly. I am busy all day, and now do my own washing and ironing and can walk to town and back. I have to go down a long incline and then eighty-two steps. Words cannot express my gratitude to God and to Mrs. Eddy for the help I have received and I hope this may help others to take the first step in Christian Science. I saw right away that I must have Science and Health, but said, I am a poor woman and the cheapest one is three dollars, so I can't buy one. These words came to me as if a voice had spoken them: You were paying out money for medicine. This will do you more good than all medicine. So I sent at once for the book, and then for the Sentinel and Journal, also for the Quarterly. I enjoy reading our Lesson, and I have got a clearer view of the Bible. I give this testimony with a prayer that it will help some one.—Santa Cruz, Calif.
