In the year 1909 I attended my first Christian Science service. I was led to look into this teaching because of the harmony I saw it had brought into the lives of some friends. After that first testimony meeting I felt I had found the truth which would lead me to a right understanding of God.
About two months after this, I experienced my first demonstration of the healing power of Christian Science. I had worn glasses for ten years, a leading specialist in this city having told me I could never do without them; in fact, I was never able to leave them off for half an hour without suffering intense headache for the rest of the day. On rising one morning I immediately went to place my glasses on, when something seemed to say to me, "Don't you believe Christian Science is true?" "Yes," was the quick reply. "Well, does it not teach you that sight is from God, that it is spiritual discernment, and that it is not in the physical eye or in a bit of glass?" Again came the reply, "Yes." "Then what are you doing putting on a bit of glass to see through?" Down went the glasses; and down they have remained ever since.
Another beautiful proof was experienced by me some four years ago. At that time an epidemic of pneumonic influenza was passing through this city; and one day I felt all the symptoms come upon me. I went to my work; but rang up a Christian Science practitioner, and she lovingly promised to help me. On the following day, Saturday, I was compelled to go home and to bed. A sister had been down some three days with the same sickness, having a doctor and a nurse in attendance. My mother, who is not a Christian Scientist, immediately said she was sending for the doctor. I told her I would not consent to see him; but, nevertheless, in half an hour's time a doctor and a nurse were ushered into my room. I thanked him kindly, but told him that I was relying on God through the teaching of Christian Science to heal me. He implored me for my mother's sake to allow him to examine me. I refused. This performance with the doctor was gone through three days running. On the second day I felt as if I might pass on; I was so very ill. The pain in both lungs was intense, and I could hardly breathe at times. The Christian Science practitioner was rung up, and treatment was given at once; and almost immediately the pain left me. Although having had a high temperature, on the third day I was normal. On Tuesday I was up in my room, though feeling very weak; and at the end of ten days I was back at the office. My sister was away from her work nearly seven weeks. I suffered none of the after effects supposed to come. Words fail to express my gratitude for this healing.
