BRANCH CHURCH SERVICES

[As published in the Christian Science Sentinel of September 1, 1923]

The Board of Directors wish to call attention to some statements in the leading editorial, "Duty Fulfilled," in the Sentinel of August 11, which might be taken as a requirement that all branch churches which do not hold Sunday evening services shall do so.

A branch church which holds one Sunday service and the Wednesday evening meeting, in accordance with the provisions of the Manual of The Mother Church, by Mary Baker Eddy, is meeting the requirements of the By-Laws so far as its services are concerned, until local conditions and the best judgment of the membership call for more than one Sunday service.

Branches of The Mother Church must determine for themselves as to the advisability of holding two Sunday services (see Article XXIII, Sections 1 and 10). Section 1 reads, in part, "The Mother Church of Christ, Scientist, shall assume no general official control of other churches, and it shall be controlled by none other."

ANNOUNCEMENT

[As published in the Christian Science Sentinel of September 22, 1923]

The Treasurer of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, has been authorized to receive contributions from individuals and branch churches and societies for relief work in Japan.

Contributions for this purpose should be sent to Edward L. Ripley, Treasurer, 236 Huntington Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts, and the funds will be expended under the direction of The Christian Science Board of Directors.

After the Directors determine that the necessity for which this Fund is established has passed, they will apply the remainder for other relief work as occasion may arise.

The collections taken on Sunday, September 9, in The Mother Church, at the morning and evening services, over and above the amount of the average Sunday collections, were devoted to the relief work in Japan.
