IMMUNITY

From the August 1927 issue of The Christian Science Journal

FREEDOM or exemption has been defined as equivalent to the word "immunity." The great desire of mankind the world over is to obtain freedom or exemption from evil. But how? Too often it is said that special ability or fortunate circumstances secure immunity from financial evils; while medical theories regard immunity from disease as being due to antitoxins in the body. The result is that few are satisfied as to their immunity from evils, fearing them instead.

Christian Science comes to prove that mankind may have immunity from all forms of evil. This immunity, however, rests not on one's own personal ability or one's so-called natural circumstances, nor yet on the components of one's material body, but on the truth which brings about right thinking. Did not Jesus teach that "out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: these are the things which defile a man"? Christian Science shows that lack of ability, lack of supply, and lack of health, all are of the nature of false witness about man, the real spiritual man.

We all know that false witness may appear to be true. Sometimes one who is perfectly innocent is accused of a crime by ignorant or malicious false witness. He may have difficulty in establishing his innocence. Yet mortals as a rule do not go about in fear of being falsely accused; for they trust the law of the land, and the justice and power of its government. Then why should men fear that they will be accused of such evils as poverty and sickness? Simply because they do not trust in the law of God, good, for protection. Some may even ask in surprise, "Will the law of good protect me?" Yet Paul in the eighth chapter of Romans says, "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death."
