MOTHER-LOVE

From the December 1930 issue of The Christian Science Journal

MOTHER-LOVE! What words so sweet, so full of meaning, so tender in all they convey to the listening thought! To Mary Baker Eddy we owe our deepest gratitude, for through her constant communion with God there came to her the revelation that God is our Mother as well as our Father, a revelation so momentous that the world as yet but slightly comprehends what it means to the human race.

For ages mankind has been taught to know God as Father; but to this deeply religious woman was given the complete revelation of the allness of God, "Truth's appearing in the womanhood as well as in the manhood of God, our divine Father and Mother" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 33). When we consider the motherhood, the mother-love, of God, that love of which human mother-love is but a faint reflection, thought is lifted upward and away from material sense. How foolish it seems that we have ever felt lonely, unhappy, afraid, when in reality we abide in the tender mother love of God. Who knows the need of her child like a mother, not the spoken request only, but the unspoken desire as well? Who like a mother is tenderly waiting to supply even the unexpressed wish of her child, if it be for the child's good? Who like a mother can comfort and console? But tenderer far than the tenderest human mother-love is the love of our Mother, God. And it is about, around, above, pouring its glorious effulgence, unspent, even on those who know it not.

And how is this divine mother-love to be brought into our human relationships, into our daily contacts with our fellow men? By persistently seeing one another as God sees us, never swerving from the vision of the perfect man our Saviour saw. Only as we live in Christ, Truth, can we hope to reflect it.
