My first healing in Christian Science was of a paralytic condition of the bowels, for which I had tried many remedies recommended by physicians, but had received only temporary relief. An article from a Christian Science Sentinel so impressed me that I eagerly questioned a friend in regard to the teachings of Christian Science. I secured a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and with the reading of the first paragraph of the beloved chapter on Prayer, knew that I had found what I had unconsciously been seeking all my life—the religion which Jesus taught and practiced. Subsequently I sought the help of a practitioner for the intestinal trouble, and gradually was healed. That was over twenty years ago.
About this time cherished plans for the future were swept away. This proved to be my hour of development, when I learned to say, "Not my will, but thine, be done." This change of circumstances brought me in contact with a loyal worker and member of a Christian Science church, with whom I became associated in a business way for a period of years. I attended the church services with her, and earnestly took up the study of the Lesson-Sermons. With the aid of the loving help and clear understanding of this worker, I learned how to solve the various problems which presented themselves in connection with my work, through the unerring rules and truths of Christian Science, and this resulted in rapid advancement in my position. In due time I availed myself of the privilege of membership in a branch church and in The Mother Church, and later, of class instruction.
Christian Science was an invaluable aid to me in the rearing of my three children. A case of convulsions, fevers, liability to colds, blood poisoning, and a proof of mental surgery stand out among the healings witnessed. The last healing referred to was that of one of the children, then three years old, who had fallen from a sled. I tried to declare the truth for her; but as she seemed to be in severe pain, and was growing worse, my thought became filled with fear, and I called a practitioner, who came to the house as soon as she could. I was holding the little one in my arms, as with every least movement she cried out with pain. A short time after the practitioner left, I heard something snap. The child became quiet and went to sleep. I laid her down in her crib without waking her, and there was no sign of the difficulty the next morning.
