At birth my fontanelle extended halfway down my forehead. I was carried on pillows for several months. At the age of four the skull bones reached development. Many doctors claimed that I should never walk or lead a useful life. I spent most of sixteen years in splints and casts, as any bump or strain might result in a fracture of some bone in my body.
After I had tried most material means heard of, including medicine, exercise, braces, two changes in climate, and one operation, and yet was spending most of my time in a wheel chair, I decided to try Christian Science. After about two months' absent treatment I began to take steps and learned to walk. A testing time came when, after I had been walking for some months, the trouble returned, and I experienced a fracture of the thigh. The bone was set by a physician and Christian Science treatment was given. There was very little swelling, no pain, and no sleeplessness. This was indeed a very different experience from any I had ever had before. The doctor, thinking the bone had knit, removed the cast in three weeks. The bone, however, had not hardened enough to remain straight, and a bend resulted. Upon X-ray examination there appeared a triangular spot which looked boneless. A consultation of several doctors, including one of the best in this state, resulted in the statement that I should never use the leg. Work was continued in Christian Science, however, and the healing came.
I was always affected during climatic changes until my mother enjoyed the opportunity of having class instruction in Christian Science. She came to me one day in a very happy frame of thought and exclaimed, "I read something in Science and Health that I never seemed to comprehend before." I inquired what it was, and was shown at the bottom of page 423 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy these words: "Bones have only the substance of thought which forms them." I was completely healed then, and have never since experienced trouble from climatic changes.
