Three years ago, when to mortal sense all seemed dark, Christian Science was brought to my notice by a friend living in a distant state. I had written her a very miserable letter, telling her of the illness of my mother, who had heart trouble, pronounced incurable. I was suffering from eye trouble, nervousness, severe headaches, and many other ills. The eye specialist had helped me, but I had to wear glasses while reading or writing, and he told me I should not take another position where I should have to use my eyes constantly.
My friend wrote to me and asked why I did not try Christian Science. My first thought was to write and tell her that if Christian Science taught that God sends sickness as punishment and plans wars and calamities, I did not care to know anything about it. On thinking it over, I decided that maybe I had better read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy first; then I should be in a position to state my objections. I never doubted but that I should have objections.
I went to the public library and procured a copy of Science and Health. For one week I read it every minute that I could spare. It was nothing less than a revelation. My troubles fell away from me and I seemed to be walking on air.
