CHRISTIAN SIMPLICITY

From the November 1933 issue of The Christian Science Journal

HOW we all love the heavenly qualities which Christ Jesus consistently manifested towards all while fulfilling his earthly mission! How replete with holy inspiration and joyous emancipation are the Biblical accounts of the Master's appearing among men! He never left an inharmonious situation or condition the same as he found it. Those who discerned the Christ as the real, spiritual selfhood of Jesus, found the world more beautiful, and a better place to live in, after they met the Saviour. His presence purified his surroundings as a ray of light dispels darkness. He healed sickness, destroyed sin, dispelled sorrow and anxiety, raised the dead. Many of those who came to him doubting were awakened to a renewed sense of faith in God; and he taught men not to be afraid, since God is Love and knows nothing of evil. Such God-sustained qualities as joy, courage, hope, faith, purity, love, he proved to be natural to the real man.

As one studies the New Testament one is impressed with the apparent ease with which Jesus performed the mighty works which earned for him the title of Saviour. He did not found Christianity on a doctrine or theory; he did not teach men ceremonies or rites; he did not tell them that the mere acceptance of the fact that he was the Son of God would save them. He demanded that all men be awakened to the realization of their true being, their sonship with God.

He gave convincing proofs that God's law of infinite good is ever available to those who believe, that is, understand Him; that the law of perfection is ever present and demon strable—not generally recognized, perhaps, but nevertheless present to be revealed and put into practical use on behalf of men. To the man with the withered hand Jesus lovingly said, "Stretch forth thy hand," and the hand was immediately re stored whole. To the leper he com passionately said, "Be thou clean," and the leprosy immediately departed. In raising Lazarus from the grave the Master thanked God, and called, "Lazarus, come forth." And we are told that "he that was dead came forth."
