The following testimony is given...

From the November 1933 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The following testimony is given in loving gratitude for the Christian Science Sunday Schools and the wonderful inspiration and help they are to our children.

About four years ago, when our daughter was ten years old, a growth developed on the bottom of one foot. At first we thought little of it, but as it spread and became very painful to walk on, it demanded much attention. The child having known nothing but Christian Science had a good understanding of it, and together we tried to work out the problem. She was doing much exhibition dancing, and I tried to overcome the trouble by seeing it as a form of error trying to deprive her of that joy. But because of her painful limping the problem seemed very real to me, and the growth continued to spread.

My mother came to visit us at the time, and not being a Christian Scientist she was greatly alarmed. Anticipating a trip to a large city, my mother, with my husband's approval, prevailed on us to have a specialist diagnose the disease. Our daughter was strongly opposed, but I promised that the examination should entail no material help. The specialist said it was a form of tumor which had to be removed or it would continue to grow, spreading to the other foot and up the legs The doctor's verdict did not affect the child's confidence in Christian Science. She reminded me of my promise, and we then left the office. My mother remained and told the doctor that we were Christian Scientists. He said, "Oh, I've gone to that church quite a lot — it is a lovely religion, but it certainly cannot remove that growth." Mother was much concerned and begged me to have it removed. Each day she promised my daughter various luxuries dear to a child if she would consent to have the operation. Her only reply was, "I am a Christian Science child and only God can heal me."
