With a heart full of joy and gratitude I wish to give my testimony as follows: I came to Christian Science only after experiencing a deep sense of discouragement because life seemed vain, and presented so much injustice. I made the acquaintance of a Christian Science practitioner, who seemed to me the embodiment of peace and rest. I went to her only to gain an idea of what this Science is. Upon leaving her I felt that she had imparted to me the true sense of peace and joy, two marvelous qualities which I seemed to have completely lost during the course of my life. None of the sad circumstances had changed, yet I myself was changed, for peace and joy were within me.
Immediately I procured for myself that great book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," which I studied most earnestly. Then I understood that Christian Science teaches that man is perfect and harmonious. Yet I had seemed to lack this God-given harmony, because twenty-five years before this a strange condition on the sole of my left foot had caused me suffering when I walked. As this unaccountable ill troubled me more and more, I went to one of the best orthopedists in Europe. He examined me carefully, and finally assured me that my foot was entirely healthy and normal, though the pain was still there when I left him. Upon a lady's recommendation, I put an iron support into my shoe, which instantly dispelled the pain. But after a time this was of no help to me, and the pain became more unbearable, so that I bandaged my whole foot to strengthen it. Although I had both the support and the bandage, I could not walk more than half an hour at a time without stopping to try to get relief. Then it was that I decided to speak of this to a Christian Science practitioner, who without delay gave me a treatment; and my faith was so great that I took off the support and the bandage, and was healed. Twenty-five years of discord had been replaced by harmony in five minutes! What joy, not only to be free from a most unpleasant condition, but to know that God is our Life, our one and only physician. No words can really express what one feels at such a time.
